Supporting this journey is the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – the framework that helps shape early years education and development.
But what exactly is the EYFS, and what does it mean for your child during their time at nursery?
What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?
The Early Years Foundation Stage, usually shortened to EYFS, provides the framework for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old.
Rather than being about formal lessons or sitting at desks, the EYFS recognises that young children learn in many different ways. Play, conversation, movement, creativity, exploration and everyday experiences can all provide valuable opportunities for learning.
At Little Weavers, we use the EYFS alongside our knowledge of each individual child to create experiences that encourage curiosity, confidence and a genuine enjoyment of learning.
The Seven Areas of Learning and Development
The EYFS is built around seven areas of learning and development. Together, they help children develop a broad range of skills that will support them throughout their early years and as they prepare for school.
1. Communication and Language
Learning to listen, understand and communicate is an important part of early childhood.
We encourage communication throughout the nursery day, whether children are listening to a favourite story, chatting with friends, singing songs, taking part in circle time or simply telling us about something exciting they did at the weekend.
These everyday conversations help children expand their vocabulary, express their thoughts and become confident communicators.
2. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Nursery gives children wonderful opportunities to develop relationships beyond their immediate family.
Playing alongside other children helps them begin to understand sharing, cooperation and the feelings of others. With support from our caring team, children can develop confidence, independence and positive relationships while knowing they have a safe and reassuring environment around them.
3.Physical Development
Young children love to move – and physical activity plays an important role in their overall development.
Our children have opportunities to run, climb, cycle and explore outdoors, alongside activities that develop their coordination and fine motor skills.
From riding bikes and enjoying PE to painting, baking and getting hands-on with sensory play, physical development can happen in all sorts of fun ways.
4. Literacy
Books, stories, songs and rhymes help children discover the enjoyment of language and begin developing the skills that will eventually support reading and writing.
As children progress towards Pre-School, we continue building these foundations and introduce activities such as phonics to help prepare them for the next stage of their education.
5. Mathematics
Early maths is everywhere.
Counting toys, comparing different sizes, building towers, recognising patterns or talking about shapes can all help children develop their understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts.
By introducing these ideas naturally through play, children can begin developing important skills without learning feeling like a formal lesson.
6. Understanding the World
Children are naturally curious. They want to know what things are, how they work and why things happen.
We encourage them to investigate the world around them through a wide variety of experiences.
Our outdoor environment is particularly important to us at Little Weavers. Children can explore nature, experience changing seasons, grow fruit and vegetables and enjoy everything from muddy puddles to our mud kitchen.
These experiences encourage children to observe, investigate, ask questions and make their own discoveries.
7. Expressive Arts and Design
Creativity gives children another way to communicate their thoughts and imagination.
Painting, drawing, music, dance, crafts, role play, messy play and construction activities allow children to experiment with different ideas, materials and ways of expressing themselves.
And, of course, there’s often plenty of fun and mess involved too!
Learning Through Play at Little Weavers
One of the most important things for parents to understand about the EYFS is that play is learning.
When a child builds a tower, splashes in water, makes something from dough, creates a picture, looks after a doll or invents an imaginary game with friends, they are developing a huge range of skills.
They may be problem-solving, communicating, negotiating, experimenting, developing coordination or using their imagination – often several of these at once.
That’s why play-based learning is at the heart of life at Little Weavers.
We provide both structured and free-play experiences, giving children the freedom to follow their interests while our experienced practitioners introduce opportunities that help extend their learning and development.
Every Child Develops Differently
Children don’t all develop at exactly the same pace or have the same interests – and we wouldn’t expect them to.
Some children may be fascinated by books and stories, while another wants to spend every available minute outside. One child might love painting and messy play, while another is happiest building, investigating or creating imaginary worlds.
Understanding the individual child enables our team to provide activities and experiences that are appropriate for their stage of development while also reflecting the things that capture their interest.
This individual approach helps make learning enjoyable, meaningful and relevant to each child.
